Lost Theory No. 1- The Others

*Editor's Note: The following column is just a theory. The views, events, and situations that I mention are not necessarily true. They are just ideas I have based on what I have seen in the various Seasons of Lost. Please do not take these as rumors or spoilers. But if they do turn out to be true, that would be kinda cool!


Since the beginning of the show, we've heard about these mysterious people who are unofficially called "The Others". Throughout the seasons, we have found out that the Others are not savages living on the Island. They are regular people, some of whom were brought to the Island for a purpose. They live in the former Dharama Barracks. They have relationships, friendships, and misfortunes. But we've also seen another side to them. They can be very hostile and evil, yet believe they are the good guys. In flashbacks, we've seen that the Others used to live in tents near very old monuments. But how did they get there? When did they get there? Who are the Others.

As of now, most of the history of the Others is pure speculation. We do know bits and peices of it, though. We know Eloise Hawking was once an Other, as was Charles Widmore. It was Ben who made Widmore leave. And the mysterious Jacob has to do with all this. So, this is what I think the history of the Others is.


The original Others were some Egyptian cult that came to the Island to build monuments and develop a mysterious civilzation. Jacob and Esau's fued carried over to the Egyptians, and caused every one of them to die. Jacob and Esau's fued would continue when the next Others arrived.

They arrived on the Black Rock, with non other than Richard Alpert as their captian. Richard eventually was approached by Jacob, and listened to what he said. Throughout the history of The Others, Richard has acted like an advisor, much like the Pope acted for many, many years. He has been their spiritual leader, and as leaders come and go, he is the constant. He never ages because he is the "son of Jacob" so to speak. He cannot die.

Eventually, all leaders fall. They grow weak or corrupt, which is the exact opposite of what Jacob is trying to prove to Esau. Jacob makes them leave. This continues and takes us right up to Ben. Jacob is intrigued by Ben, and wants him as thier leader. He soon loses interest in the man, and sets his eyes on John Locke. He tries to get Locke to the Island, and by doing so, must bring a whole lot of people to the Island in the process. Among them, Jacob choose people from the Others, as well as people he put on his list (Jack, Kate, Sawyer- don't remember everyone, that's why I need to rewatch the series!) as well as Walt. The ones he didn't want were killed during the crash, and the ones he eventually thought were not needed were killed.

Why did he need people? Jacob is creating an army to finally win the war with Esau. Which, in short means that those he likes are destined to become the Others. Anyone who ends up on the Island- through crashes, Dharma, or other ways- can have the power to become Others.

In short, The Others are not bad people at all. To be cliched, they are mearly misunderstood. The Others are just doing what Jacob wants. But still, there are so many unanswered questions. By the time Lost ends, we will find out who these mysterious people really are, and how they got to the Island.

"Follow the Leader"

Last night's episode did just that. We followed several people who have been leaders in the past, present, and/or future.

First, let's take a look at Sawyer. He has been the ehad of Security at Dharam after being a memeber for 3 years. Now, it was finally revealed to the other people that Sawyer- or in this case, LaFluer- took little Ben to the Others- or in this case, the Hostiles- and was in fact, a traitor. Now to get information out of him, the evil Dharma people kept hitting him, and finally hit Juliet. (Was anyone else grinning at the sight of her getting hit?) But he did evenutally talk, to save his skin and leave behind everyone else. Yep, that's right: Sawyer was a coward and left everyone else to save him and Juliete. And what kills me is, this is after Hurley said "Sawyer would never leave us."

Dr. Chang finally learned that Hurley and the rest were from the future through a lot of comical questions, and that Miles was indeed hi son. He ordered the evacuation of the island, and prepared for The Incident.

Jack teamed up with the Others and did just the opposite. He prepared to stop the Incident with a hydrogen bomb (One question: how would that help?). Elosie and Richard led him, along with newly-found Sayid, to the Temple where the bomb is stored. Kate refused to participate in this expedition after Jack used the "D-word". Yep, he said "It's our Destiny"! Wow, this "man of science" sure is turning into a "man of faith" I was shocked when he siad that, although I still think he's making the wrong desicion.

Everyone on that plane crashed on the Island for a reason. Jack to resolve his daddy issuses, Kate to realize what she did, Locke to walk again and become the leader, Rose to het rid of her breast cancer... the list goes on and on. Which makes me think about doing a post like that soon.

Anyway, back in the present, Locke has assumed his leadership role as leader of the Others, with Richard trying, but failing, to advise him. We learned that Locke in 2007 sent Richard to help time traveling Locke in the past and told him that he needed to die. Pretty cool scene right there, the writers are pretty smart. Locke also revealed his plan to "save his people".

It's also funny to note how Ben has no idea what's going on. Now he knows how everyone else felt when he talked to them.

Anyway, Locke's plan- to kill Jacob. Ben was stunned, like the rest of us. WTF?!?! First, why would he do that to Jacob who he seemed to worship in the past. Second of all, how can he kill someone who has never been seen?

Next week is the finale- "The Inicident". What will this episode hold? Will it answer questions, ask more, do both?

1). How/why would Locke kill Jacob?
2). Does the Incident really happen?
3). Why did Richard say he saw all of the Losties die, and if he's telling the truth, why didn't he and Ben and the rest of the Others die?

"Dead is Dead"

*Editor's Note: Sorry for not posting this sooner, but I was in New Jersey since Thursday morning. Now I'm here to recap the saga of Lost. Games of the Boardwalk info coming on Tues! Happy Easter! :)

Dead is Dead. Or is it? As we have seen, John Locke was resurected. What a coincidence that I'm dicussing this on Easter, the day Jesus rose from the dead. But anyway, back to Lost...

Ben claims he knew this would happen. Then why was he scared as hell when he woke up next to a very much alive Locke? I'll tell you why. En is a liying manipulator, out to help one person- himself. I wish the smoke monster- whoops, getting ahead of myself.

Anyway, Ben came back to be judged. Really??? As we saw in flashbacks, Charles Widmore was kicked out because he "broke the rules". What are the rules exactly? Was he not supposed to have a daughter? We found out that wierd haired Ben from the 90s was supposed to kill Danielle, but stole her daughter instead. Why? Charles said the island wanted her dead. And lo and behold, Alex was killed... inversely by Widmore.

Then, he tries to get back at Widmore by attempting to kill Penelope. That failed, thank God. Ben got beat up by Desmond, but he tried to kill Penny, but stopped after seeing Charlie. What is his deal with kids? Anyway, Ben was beat, which brought us to his appearance on Ajira Air Flight 316.

Back on the Island, Locke and Ben teamed up with Sun and went to the temple, where Ben was to be judged. But what did the smoke monster do? Let him relive painful memories and live. But then, Alex (dead or alive?) appeared and said that if Ben doesn't listen to Locke, she would kill him. That's interesting.

2). What do the survivors of Ajira have to do with the plot?
3). Is Alex really dead, or are ghosts able to kill people?
